Mounjaro KwikPen

Mounjaro is used as a weight loss medicine alongside a calorie-controlled diet and increased physical activity in adults aged 18 years old and over, with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or over. If you suffer from weight-related conditions such as (prediabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart problems) and have a BMI of 27 or over, it might also be suitable for you.

Mounjaro® comes in a pre-filled, easy-to-use injection pen. Each pen contains tirzepatide, the active ingredient, in varying strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg, and 15mg.

You inject Mounjaro® under the skin of your stomach, thigh, or upper arm once a week. We'll start you on a low dose (2.5mg) and gradually increase it every four weeks until you reach a maintenance dose that's right for you (typically 5mg, 10mg, or a maximum of 15mg). This gradual approach helps your body adjust and minimises potential side effects.

Mounjaro is one of the most effective weight loss treatments available when used with a calorie-controlled diet and exercise. On average, users lose up to 20.9% of body weight over 36 weeks and 25.3% of body weight over a period of 88 weeks.

Mounjaro is designed for long-term weight management and can be prescribed for up to 2 years. While you might notice some initial changes, significant weight loss typically becomes apparent around 6 months. Maximum weight loss generally occurs around 12-18 months, depending on your dosage, individual response, and lifestyle.

All three medicines are approved for weight loss by the MHRA. Ozempic and Wegovy contain an active ingredient called semaglutide which works with the GLP-1 receptor. In the case of Mounjaro, the active ingredient is tirzepatide which acts on both GLP-1 and the GIP receptors. This combination effect on receptors has shown to be more effective than the drugs that work on the GLP-1 receptor alone.

Your first order will include a sharps bin and a special container for safely disposing of used needles. After each injection, carefully place the needle into the sharps bin. Once you've finished all 4 doses and removed the needle, the pen itself can be disposed of in your household waste or the sharps bin.

Contact your local council for the sharps bin collection service for safe disposal when your bin is full. You can also purchase additional sharps bins from us when you place new orders for medication.

Some people may experience side effects like nausea, vomiting, constipation, or diarrhoea while taking Mounjaro®. These side effects are usually temporary and tend to improve within a few weeks as your body adjusts to the medication.

To minimise potential side effects like nausea or diarrhoea, which typically subside within a few weeks, your Mounjaro® dose will be gradually increased every four weeks. You can also manage any initial discomfort by getting fresh air, sipping cold drinks, and eating smaller, more frequent meals.

While uncommon (affects 1in 100), some people taking Mounjaro® may experience side effects such as an increased risk of gallstone disease, pancreatitis, low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), or severe allergic reactions. Additionally, those with diabetic retinopathy may notice changes in their vision. It's important to contact our clinical team if you experience any concerning symptoms.

Rarely (1 in 1000), Mounjaro® may cause kidney problems, including reduced function or failure. Signs include a metallic taste in your mouth, decreased urination, and unexplained bruising. If you notice these symptoms, contact our clinical team immediately.

Although serious side effects are rare, they can include allergic reactions or pancreatitis. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms like difficulty breathing, a swollen face or throat, or severe abdominal pain. Mounjaro Kwikpen comes in different strengths. The starting dose is Mounjaro Kwikpen 2.5mg. The dose is administered once weekly. Each Pen contains four doses.

Mounjaro is administered once a week using a convenient pre-filled pen called the Mounjaro KwikPen. Injections are given under the skin of your stomach area (abdomen), thigh, or upper arm. It is important to remember to rotate your injection site regularly, even if you select the same site such as the upper arm, you should use a different spot for the injection each time.

In case of a missed dose, If it’s been 4 days or less since you should have used Mounjaro:

• Use it as soon as you remember
• Then inject your next dose as usual on your scheduled day

If it’s been more than 4 days since you should have used Mounjaro:

• Skip the missed dose
• Then inject your next dose as usual on your scheduled day

Just remember not to use a double dose to make up any missed doses. The minimum time between two doses must be at least 3 days.

To self-administer the weight loss injection, you need three main consumables. These are pre-injection alcohol wipes to clean the injection site, disposable needles and a safeguard sharps bin to safely dispose of the used needles. We provide a starter pack of the consumables with the first injection order that contains a small number of wipes, needles and a safeguard sharps bin. Any subsequent consumables can be purchased from the pharmacy as required.
